Skeeter Bronson (Adam Sandler) is a hotel handyman who is promised as a child by his father Marty (Jonathan Pryce) to be the owner of the family hotel after it is bought by chain Nottingham Hotels. 25 years later, Mr. Nottingham (Richard Griffiths) plans to build a new hotel and appoints another man, Kendall (Guy Pearce) to become the owner. Skeeter's sister (Courteney Cox) asks him to watch her kids, because the school at which she is the principal is being closed and she is looking for a job in Arizona. The first night, Skeeter tells a bedtime story taking place in medieval times, with some additions from her kids. It comes true. Mr. Nottingham gives Skeeter a shot at the manager when he says his new hotel theme was taken by Hard Rock Hotel and on his way home it rains gumballs, all from the story. The next night, at the hotel, he tells another story set in the Old West, and when he waits for it to come true, a man (Rob Schneider) steals his wallet. He saves Mr. Nottingham's daughter, Violet (Teresa Palmer), from the paparazzi and gets kicked by a dwarf. The night after that, out on a campfire, he tells them about a Greek stunt man, and he ends up falling for his sister's friend and fellow colleague Jill (Keri Russell) and it rains, with "Abe Lincoln" being the president's engraven image on a penny. The last night, he tells them about a space fight, and the next night, after he wins the gig of manager, he learns that the closing school is where the new Nottingham Hotel is, and gets fired for extinguishing the cake, and covering the boss with fire-extinguishing foam. With guidance from his father's spirit, he gets the hotel moved to Santa Monica, and then with Jill is able to end the demolition, saving the school and his nephew and niece. His nephew gets his first kiss and in turn Skeeter asks the niece if her brother gets a kiss can he get one from Jill. Jill accepts and she joyfully kisses Skeeter. Sometime later, he marries Jill and founds a hotel named after his late father, with his competition becoming the hotel handyguys. Mr. Nottingham gets over his germophobia and becomes the school nurse, Violet marries Skeeter's best friend Mickey (Russell Brand) giving him control of the Nottingham Empire, becoming the 9th richest man alive, in the meantime newlywed Skeeter and Jill have a baby.

Colonel Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) finds himself battling bugs, new and old, on the Federation frontier planet known as Roku San.

Off-duty, Rico and his old friend Dix Hauser (Boris Kodjoe) get into a bar-fight with farmers protesting the war. During the fight, Rico strikes Dix to stop him from shooting one of the farmers. Dix arrests him but the base is attacked by Arachnids and Rico is needed for its defense. When Roku San falls, Rico is blamed by the Federal Media and set for execution for insubordination and striking a superior officer. But the Federation has other plans for him. Captain Lola Beck (Jolene Blalock) is marooned on a classified planet known as Planet OM-1 with Sky Marshall Anoke (Stephen Hogan).

Rico must lead the Marauders, an elite team of troopers, on a rescue mission, using the Federation's new battle-suits. Rico and the Marauders defeat the Arachnids on OM-1, and save their fellow soldiers from death at the hands of a treasonous element operating within Federation itself. OM-1 is discovered to be the home of the Bug Hive, the Arachnid's ruling body, and is destroyed by a "Q-Bomb." Rico is subsequently promoted to general, and given permanent command of the Marauder program
